The software

Freeplane is a free and open-source software application that supports thinking, sharing information, getting things done at work, in school and at home. It provides you a set of tools for mind mapping (also known as concept mapping or information mapping) and navigating the mapped information. Freeplane is also a robust and more user-friendly alternative to Xmind and Mindmeister and other mind mapping software.

Freeplane was written in Java using Java Swing, OSGi, and Java Gi. It will work on any platform that has Java installed. It can be run locally and portablely from removable storage, such as a USB flash drive.

Freeplane is characterized by the following:

  • Export to PNG, JPEG, SVG (in addition to HTML / XHTML and PDF)
  • Find/Replace in all Open Maps
  • Paste HTML as node structure.
  • Outline mode
  • Version portable (runs off a USB flash drive).
  • Scripting via Groovy.
  • Spell checking.
